about me.
Katherine Carter is a native of Long Beach, California, is a performer,
choreographer, and a BFA Candidate in Dance at California State University, Long Beach. Katherine has trained for nearly a decade in modern, house, ballet, jazz, Umfundalai and improvisation but has extensive experience in modern dance. She trained under faculty members Keith Johnson, Rebecca Lemme, Meg Madorin, Brenna Monroe-Cook, and Rebecca Bryant for modern and under Danzel Thompson-Stout for House and Umfundalai. Katherine performed in guest artist piece “For Addie, Denise, Cynthia, and
Carole” choregraphed by Hannah Victoria Thomas and has also been a part of student-choreographed work under CSULB alumni Jesus Gallardo & Fabian Zuniga. Katherine the Creative Director of heels dance group called Divine6 as well as a performer. She is pursuing a Master’s in Counseling Psychology hoping to eventually create her own plan in integrating dance and counseling with families and married couples. Katherine also aspires to form a part of a contemporary modern company like Jacob Jonas The Company, AIM by Kyle Abraham and plans to also pursue the commercial industry.
As a choreographer and performer, I navigate places where memory and emotion continuously collide. As a choreographer my work is a conversation between physical and emotional past of unraveling of trauma, struggle, and the fragility that evolves and lives within both. I dance to understand what it means to be human: to feel, to break, to rebuild. I strive for my movement gravitate towards honesty and inviting others to witness vulnerability as strength. In these spaces, I aim to create an environment where bodies are allowed to be both broken and beautiful, where emotion becomes a form of release and healing. Through movement, I learned about myself again and I hope others might find a piece of their own becoming.
